What are Open Education Resources (OER)? OER are teaching, learning and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use or re-purposing by others. Open educational resources include full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools, materials or techniques used to support access to
knowledge. Hewlett Foundation Open Education Resources
. The OERC collaborative has organized a variety OER collections that can easily discovered at the Hewlett-supported OER Consortium and OER Commons
as well as MERLOT's open educational digital library services and resources.

ONIX ![]()
THE National Cancer Research Institute's free online cancer research portal, ONIX, (ONcology Information eXchange) enables scientists and clinicians to search through and access international research data held online - to improve the flow of cancer research information between individuals, institutions and organizations. The portal is free-to-use and uses powerful search technology - which significantly reduces the time it currently takes for scientists and clinicians to find cancer-related data and information across the spectrum of research from genomics to clinical trials. This reduces duplication of research effort across the globe and makes it easier for researchers to collaborate on similar studies. It will speed up the development of new therapies, and could potentially improve prognosis and diagnosis.
In addition to the Hewlett-supported OER, the OERC collaborative will integrate MERLOT
(Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching,) and other open digital libraries from around the world. MERLOT brings over 10 years experience in OER digital library services and has a federated search service that enable you to simultaneously search digital libraries from across the globe at http://fedsearch.merlot.org/fedsearch/
including:
Biological Sciences Pathway
Provided by BEN: BioSciEdNet at AAAS BEN Collaborative partner organizations provide access to over 4,700 reviewed resources covering 77 biological Sciences topics. BEN provides resources, tools, and professional development for educators at the high school and undergraduate levels. BEN is managed by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Registration is required.
Connexions
A place to view and share educational material made of small knowledge chunks called modules that can be organized as courses, books, reports, etc. Anyone may view or contribute. (USA)
Mathematical Sciences Pathway
Math Gateway is an online resource published by the Mathematical Association of America. The site provides online resources for both teachers and students of Mathematics that include: Convergence, a magazine that teaches Mathematics using its history; the Journal of Online Mathematics and its Applications (JOMA), a scholarly journal, plus; free classroom-tested and peer reviewed digital classroom resources.
ChemEd Digital Library
Provided by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the Journal of Chemical Education (JCE) The ChemEd DLib collaboration will include collections of the JCE DLib and the ACS Education Division. An innovative element of the project will use tables of contents of textbooks to locate resources. ChemEd DLib will create new communities centered around different educational levels (such as high school, undergraduate), provide resources in different sub-disciplines of Chemistry (such as physical), and different pedagogical areas (such as problem-based learning). Other project partners include the University of Wisconsin at Madison (JCE) and Carnegie-Mellon University (Chem-Collective project).
Digital Library for Earth System Education
The Digital Library for Earth System Education (DLESE) is a distributed community effort involving educators, students, and scientists working together to improve the quality, quantity, and efficiency of teaching and learning about the Earth system at all levels.
DLESE supports Earth system Science education by providing: access to high-quality collections of educational resources, access to Earth data sets and imagery including the tools and interfaces that enable their effective use in educational settings, support services to help educators and learners effectively create, use, and share educational resources, communication networks to facilitate interactions and collaborations across all dimensions of earth system education.
DLESE resources include electronic materials for both teachers and learners, such as lesson plans, maps, images, data sets, visualizations, assessment activities, curriculum, online courses, and much more. The National Science Foundation provided funding for the development of DLESE which is now operated by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Computational and Information Systems Laboratory and the NCAR Library on behalf of the education community.

Cancer, a set of complex diseases which are increasing in incidence in developing countries as infectious diseases decline and more people smoke, is becoming an increasingly important health problem. It is essential to develop more capacity for cancer control in order to both increase the efficiency of existing cancer control programs though supplementary professional education, and to create new capacity through training additional health care personnel and expanding the available facilities for cancer prevention and treatment.
